Simple Super Smooth Applesauce

I started making applesauce a few years ago, after picking half a bushel of apples from a local orchard. In my search for an applesauce recipe I saw so many variations of ingredients and most of them were for making a very large batch. I mean, I had apples, I didn’t think I should have to have a ton of other ingredients to turn those apples into applesauce. I don’t remember how I made my applesauce that first time, but I’m sure I tried to find the simplest recipe I could. The next few times, I tried to find that same recipe I used, but I could never find it. Eventually, I stopped following recipes and just followed the basics that I had come to know and adjusted the applesauce as I went. Now making applesauce is so easy! I wanted to share this recipe I came up with for anyone else out there that is also looking for a simple, delicious, basic ingredient applesauce.

Simple Super Smooth Applesauce

This is a simple small batch recipe for beginners. It does not take a lot of ingredients, and it does not make an overwhelming amount of applesauce. This recipe can also make unsweetened applesauce for baking or other purposes. Simply do not add the cinnamon or sugar.

Prep Time: 15 min | Cook Time: 25 min | Total Time: 40 min

Servings: 2

Ingredients:

  • Approx. 1 lb. of prepared apples (peeled and sliced) or 3 medium apples
  • ⅓ cup water
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • ¼ tsp of cinnamon (more to taste)

Instructions:

  1. Peel and slice your apples! Either cube the apples or slice very thin. The smaller the pieces, the faster it will cook.
  2. Add all ingredients to a small-medium pot (leave out cinnamon and sugar if making unsweetened applesauce). Bring to a boil then immediately bring down to a simmer, then cover.

Note: As the apples cook, there will be more and more liquid to boil as the juice from the apples separate. So don’t worry if it doesn't look like there is not much liquid at first. Stir and check occasionally. You want the apples to turn soft and almost mushy (basically, a very chunky applesauce consistency) This may take about 20-30 minutes.
  3. Once the apples reach the proper consistency, remove from the heat. Next you will pour your applesauce into a blender or food processor. (alternatively use an immersion blender)

Note: you may need to let your applesauce cool before adding to the blender, if your blender is plastic and sensitive to heat. Blend until the applesauce reaches your desired smoothness! I blend for about 30 seconds.
  4. Eat immediately if you would like it warm or pour into a heat safe container for later. Sprinkle with more cinnamon to taste!

Notes:

If making unsweetended applesauce, omit the sugar and cinnamon.
